The mission of the Sword & Spoon Foundation is to cultivate friendship and partnership (the fancy Latin word is “amicitia”) and to envision and encourage ideas and action in advance of the common good together. We believe every person has a special calling, and that our callings are best advanced through relationships with friends. Together, we become a powerful force in pursuit of the common good.
Our collaborative projects generally fit into one of three areas of focus:
- Cultural Renewal – Projects that promote virtue in public life are necessary and often underinvested.
- Faith and the Arts and Academy – Our artistic and academic communities profoundly shape the perception and plausibility of faith in our culture.
- Service of the “Least of These” – The call to serve is a central obligation for all who have capacity and resource.
How We Began
With the belief that if one family plants small seeds – whether they be effort, compassion, or just time – the results may grow to benefit many, John and Jean Kingston and their four children (the original six seeds) began their first project in 2005 with SixSeeds. The Sword & Spoon Foundation took root from there, with both groups growing to be a collection of friends with the shared belief that engaging the culture in fun, creative, collaborative ways would lead to a healthier society for our children and generations to come.

Through Sword & Spoon Foundation and SixSeeds, and together with our partners, we develop films, stories, and other artistic pieces that highlight the good, the true, and the beautiful in the world, helping create an “echo chamber of virtue” to replace some of the unpleasant chatter that creates the soundtrack to our world. We also roll up our sleeves – as families and friends – to creatively demonstrate generosity and service together.
